Why it is Important to Speak Life to Teens.

I have always had a passion to work with kids and teens and as I spend more and more time with them as an adult, the more I realize that less and less kids/teens are having life spoken into their lives.

They're in an environment where information is at their fingertips all hours of the day. They are completely entertained all the time which means as adults, we do not spend as much time getting to know them and pouring into their lives as we should. I sit at a restaurant and see teens eat while on their phone and communication and family bonding simply is not happening. This is just one example of many.

There are consequences for these actions. Who is pouring into those kids lives? Social media and pop culture or loving and caring people in their lives? Most likely it is the first. We should not be shocked as to why the current generation is seen as entitled, lost, and lonely. It is becoming more and more evident that teens are crying out for connection and relationship that is authentic and genuine, and no one sees it.

It doesn't matter if you're a parent, sibling, cousin, or just a friend,  speak life and hope into the lives of teens who are around you. Yes, it takes effort. Yes, it can be exhausting and tiring. But these kids need it so when they are faced with the evils of the world, they have the support needed to be successful.

Let's not let the culture dictate who is molding the current generation. That is our job.

There is no better time than now to do something.

Hello Dear Friend.

At the beginning of 2015, I decided to challenge myself with a list of goals I wanted to accomplish in the year. Some were easy to reach, while some were much harder to obtain.

Regardless, I loved that I made a list of things I wanted to do and try. It grounded me. It pushed me to grow. It taught me the most important things in life are being in relationship with others and enjoying life with them. God made us relational beings and some of the best memories are shared with some of the best people on the planet.

Last year was full of laughter, challenges, growing pains, learning curves, kindness, and spontaneity. I went out of my comfort zone and tried new avenues of art. I went to a couple rodeos. Saw some kickin' bands. I got to hug on family. See friends get married and others have babies. I got connected to one of the best small groups ever. Made new friends. Grew closer to old ones. Hugged on some I haven't seen in years. I dance and sang and fished.

All these things I shared with some amazingly stellar people. I am excited to see what 2016 holds, and I can't wait to see how the Lord is going to reveal Himself even more each and every day.

I encourage you to make a list. It may not get complete or even close to being complete but that doesn't matter. What matters is that you push yourself more and more out of your comfort zone and see how God uses it for the kingdom. It truly is amazing.

Love God and be kind to people.

Six Ways to be a Top Notch Friend.

Being a friend is a blessing and a curse if we were all honest with ourselves.  It is a blessing because they bring life and joy to your life when we need them the most. But a curse, because it means we have to be vulnerable and allow someone into the deep crevices of the beautiful and ugly parts of our lives, which can sometimes be intimidating and scary.  Am I alone in this?

Everyone needs a friend and we all need one, and friends can come in all shapes and sizes.  It can come in the form of a sibling, parent, high school friend, or someone you met on an airplane.  I am by no means the perfect friend and won't claim to be one, but we can all use that refresh button to make sure we are striving to be the best friend to those around us and show that we appreciate what they bring to the table in our lives.

So, without further ado, here are six applicable ways we can make sure we are being the most top notch friend we can be.  Please read this and put your own personal twist on them because in all honesty, there is no better you than you.

1: Be Available.
There is nothing worse than being with someone who is either emotionally checked out or just can't make that coffee date.  Sometimes we are swept away with always thinking about tomorrow, when we should really sit down and be in the present.  No need to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has its own worries.
-Matthew 6:25-34

2: Learn to Truly Listen.
I know I can get so busy with work and life that I never sit down and just listen to how my friends are doing.  And sometimes when we sit down to catch up with my friends, our phone is right there to distract us.  Try to practice being with people without having the phone out to pull you away from the conversation.  Sometimes all someone needs is to have your full attention and be listened to, nothing else.
-James 1:19

3: Meet Them Where They Are.
Our lives are always up and down in the various seasons we are in, and sometimes our friends need us to bring them out of the rough seasons.  It may take some extra effort on our end, but just know that they will return the favor when you are in a rough season in life.
-Ruth 1:16-18 / The whole book of Ruth is awesome.  Synopsis: She lost her husband and stayed with her mother-in-law Naomi (who also lost her husband and sons), not because she had to, but because she wanted to.  Read Ruth; it is powerful to see what a faithful friend looks like and the blessings that come from it.

4: Go Beyond the Like and Comment.
Sometimes our friendships seem to be strong via social media, when in reality you haven't seen that person in weeks.  Make sure that if you're within driving distance of that person, that you get some hang out time in.  If you're not in driving distance, a phone call, text, or letter are always great ways to give that personal touch to show you care.
-Romans 12:9-2

5: Encourage the Socks Off of Your Friend.
Sometimes we all need someone who believes in us and urges us to press on even if it does not make sense.  We all just need that little "you go girl" moment where we feel like we have our own little cheerleader section.  Every person has their own love language to show how they receive and give affection/appreciation to others.  Find out what yours and your friends' love language is.  It will really help put things into perspective and it is fun.
-If you have never taken the love language test, you can take a free online quiz here! http://www.5lovelanguages.com/profile/

6: Create Memories.
Don't forget that we are all in this crazy world together.  Go and create fun memories with those closest to you.  Go to that pumpkin patch.  Have that Twilight movie marathon!  Play on that flag football team.  Take that cooking class together.  Whatever you do, have fun doing it!  Never get too busy in life / work that you forget how to have fun with your friends.

Five Reasons Why It's Important to Hang With Your Parents.

There is this unspoken rule when becoming an adult, that in order to be considered a healthy adult, you must completely separate from your parents.  I heard it when I was approaching college graduation and I still hear it now.

The question I have is why must we remove ourselves from our parents' care and wisdom in order to become an adult?  Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in making choices / decisions and being a responsible adult, but I also don't think the absence of parents has to be done in order to mature.

This is why I think it is important to hang out with your parents.  Not only is it going to show appreciation and honor them, it will actually be great for you because your parents are the foundation to who you are.  So, we should make sure our foundation is healthy.  A happy family is a strong family.

So, here are 5 reasons why I think it is important as an adult to hang out with your parents:

1) They always give and give and give and give some more, and sometimes they need someone to pour into them.
I am not a parent, but from what I have heard it is hard.  Many many sleepless nights.  The financial pressure of adding another mouth to feed.  No babysitter to go on date night.  They are always taking care of the kids, whether financially or emotionally.  Sometimes they need someone to treat them to something special.  Here is my challenge to you.  Take them out to the movies.  Pay for their dinner.  Buy their next coffee.  This will tell them that what they have done / do for you is noticed and appreciated.

2) They may be older than you, but they still want to have fun too.
Time is now a precious thing.  They went to work everyday, then they took you to football practice, and your sister to choir rehearsal.  Don't forget the youth group you were a part of and the ice cream social afterwards.  Then squeeze in dinner and then it is about time to go to bed and do it all over again the next day.  Parents put their social calendar aside and put their focus on the calendar of their kids.  This just means, we as kids, need to put in that extra effort to show them they are worth the time to make sure they're having fun and enjoying life, not just going through the motions.

3) They will never stop being parents, even as you get older.  So, let them do their job and you do yours.
Just because we are getting older, doesn't mean they are going to stop being your parents.  Your dad is always going to care if your car is running well and your mom will always double check to make sure you are happy and hanging with good friends.  It comes with the territory.  So, let them be parents.  When they check in on you, let them know all is good, with details.  But go the next step further and ask them what is new in their life.  Show interest in them.  They are going through life just like you and are always learning new things.  You just may learn a thing or two about your parents.

4) They have walked through the time of life you are currently going through.
Your parents have already been where you are right now.  They will have some wisdom to share with you if you take the time to ask.  They have success stories as well as those times where they failed.  Let them teach you and share a part of their life and story with you.  This will allow them to impart their wisdom and you will get to know them beyond just being your dad and mom.

5) This will honor them and validate that even though they are human, we will always be there for them no matter what.
The people who spend time with their parents, are the people who are willing to continue to be corrected and humble.  They are people who do not think of themselves too highly to think they have it all together and no longer need instruction.  We all need those around us to cheer us on and always have our backs as well as smack us around every now and then.  Spending time with your parents will do just that.  It is exhibiting to them that even though they make mistakes, you still care and cherish what they have to say and they get to do what they love to do: be your parent.

I know not everyone has a good relationship with their parents.  Even with that said, it is never too late to make a difference and change your relationship with them.  In order to have a strong relationship, both sides must put in effort in order to see results.  I encourage you to try to put in that effort and see where it takes you.  I promise you won't regret it.

Go hug your dad and mom today.  I double dog dare you.

From Country Dancin' to Hockey Games.

Having some goals and tangible activities in the forefront of my mind keep me grounded in the train of thought there is more to life than going to work and coming home and then doing it all again the next day.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is important to work hard and to bring your absolute best everyday to the job, even when exhaustion and frustration hits.  I believe my generation needs to know what it looks like to do whatever it takes in order to survive, myself included.

But it is also just as important to remember we are not robots.  We are not beings that were made to slave the day away.  Hence, country dancing and hockey games.

I had some amazing friends come visit from California and I wanted them to experience Texas.  And I mean truly experience Texas.  So, one Saturday night we decided to go country dancing.  In a the middle of nowhere Texas.  And boy did we dance.

And we loved it.

It was something that I have never done before and it really pushed me out of my comfort zone.  If you know me, I usually always turn down any sort of dancing.  One, because I don't know how and two, I feel silly doing it.  But I think we all need to push ourselves outside of our norm and just go for it.  It is exhilarating and embarrassing and fantastically fun.

There just isn't anything like getting together in a group of people where everyone is gathered for a common goal.  Dancing.  Twirling.  Laughing.  Yelling.  Cheering.

It is wonderful.

Going to a hockey game with my younger sister was really an experience all in itself.  It is fast paced and always unpredictable.  When a player scores, everyone just stands and cheers and you can't help but join.  You get excited when they do.  You get mad when they do.  It is what is exciting about hockey and any other sport really.

Camaraderie is made both on the field and off.  As I sat there for just a moment, even just for a few minutes, everyone was on the same team.  No one was there judging one another.  No one was there telling the other person they are not good enough for this reason or that.  No one is there for any other reason than to be one big team.

I wish life was more like that.  One big team.  But we sit and we compare ourselves with one another and the hierarchy system is then put into place.  And yet we are all striving for acceptance and community.  There is rarely a sense of true community.

I am thankful that I am purposely putting myself in places where I normally don't tread.  It is constantly teaching me new things and I am reminded there is too much beauty in the world being taken for granted.

I ask that you go out of your comfort zone and try new things.  Tread into those adventures you always dreamed of going into.

Who knows.  You just might surprise yourself.

5 Reasons Why You Need to Take a Spontaneous Trip.

Hello Friends,

As some of you may know, a few weeks ago I wrote out a bucket list for things I want to try to accomplish this year.  One of the items on my list was to go on a spontaneous trip without making any plans.  And that is what we did.  My friend and I got in the car and hit the road.

We ended up driving down to Port Aransas, Texas for the weekend and had a blast at the beach (which was also on the list).  Part of why it was such a fun trip was living moment by moment without feeling pressure to move onto the next activity purely because it was "scheduled".

So, here are 5 reasons why I think everyone needs to go on one spontaneous trip where no plans are made:

1) You are able to fully embrace each moment for what it is.  The clock now really has no meaning.  If you wanted to sit in lawn chairs next to the beach for hours, you can do it.  The ticking of the clock to remind you it will end soon, is no longer a factor.  You can stay right at the shore all day if that's what you want to do.  What a beautiful feeling.

2) Expectations of how the trip is supposed to be like completely vanishes.  When plans aren't made and you choose what you do when you feel like it, it leaves you stress free with total freedom to change your mind at any point.  We have all been there when we make vacation plans months in advance and when the time comes to actually go, if those items do not come to pass, there is somehow a sense of frustration and disappointment.  Isn't the point of a vacation to relax and enjoy what you're doing with good company?  When expectations are gone, you really can only go up from there.

3) It helps us give up control.  We live in a world where we NEED to know what we are doing, when, where, and how.  Sometimes letting loose and giving up control helps remind us it is the simple things in life that matter.

4) They create for some good memories.  Because plans and schedules are not made, it leaves room for the unthinkable to happen and those are the memories that will keep us talking for years to come.  Those are the stories worth telling.  You may be reminded of these times when someone starts a sentense with, "Remember that one time...".

5) It is not the trip that really counts, it is who you share life with.  Some of the most memorable trips I have taken have been with family and friends who hold a special place in my heart.  Of course the places and things we have seen and done are memories I cherish, but it is the people that really hold value to those memories.

I encourage you to let go of control and just go.  The sooner is always the better.  There is nothing more freeing than getting in a car with some good friends, popping in that mix cd, and get on the way to your next adventure.

There is no better time than now.

The Art of Wood Burning.

So, today I spent most of the day learning how to burn wood.  The art of wood burning.  I am not sure the correct terminology, but either way I did it today.  First item off of my to-do list.

And it was awesome.

It took a lot of time and patience, but I loved trying something new and something completely out of the ordinary.  Here is a video for you to watch and some photos of the finished products.

Enjoy.

My To-Do List.

Life after college is a strange one.  It pushes you into adulthood whether you are ready for it or not.  I have learned many things being in the real world and thought I'd share what's been on my mind recently.

One of the things I have learned is time is precious.  Time flies.  Time moves.  Time pushes everything forward.  In a blink of an eye you are going to ask yourself where the last 5 years have gone.  What about the last 10?  I don't want to live a life where time is gone and I haven't taken advantage of the adventure that was right there in front of me.

So, here I am publicly saying things that I want to do and improve on for this year.  You may be asking yourself why I am doing this.  Well here it is.  I want to share my adventures with you.  Yes you.  I want you to be a part of it.  So, here is my list.  Take it or leave it, but I am going to take life head on.  So what do you say?  Are you game?

I want to go country dancing.
I want to go on a spontaneous trip where no plans are made.  Just get in the car and go.
I want to learn how to burn wood and make art.
I want to spend an entire night outside looking at the stars in the middle of nowhere.
I want to go to the beach.
I want to spend an entire day at the river sitting in my hammock.
I want to get on a plane and visit friends I haven't seen in years.
I want to learn how to play the banjo.
I want to giggle more, laugh more, and laugh so hard I cry.
I want to go bow-fishing and deep sea fishing.
I want to be kissed at midnight on New Years Eve.
I want to write a song and sing it.
I want to go to a hockey game.
I want to spend an entire day without looking at my phone.
I want to learn how to make a pie.
I want to take more photos with and of people and places I love.
I want to stop comparing myself with those around me.
I want to write more letters to people.  Simplicity will always be timeless.
I want to take a cake decorating class.
I want to pick an entire bouquet of flowers from a field of wild flowers and give it to someone.  Just because I can.
I want to live with a spirit of wild abandon.
I want to have a moment where I have 20 seconds of insane courage.  Just 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery.
I want to make a difference for the Kingdom.
I want to love and care for those who are the nameless, faceless, and Fatherless.
I want to think more of others and less of myself.
I want to be a difference maker.
I want to see beauty in anything and everything.
I want to make compassion second nature and love my everyday attire.
I want to live a life full of adventures that leaves a legacy that is glorifying to my Savior.

My Story. Your Story. Our Story.

It has been a while since my last post, but in all honesty I think it's because I have been learning so much and I didn't really know how to put what I was learning into words.  I thought maybe it is time I try to share what has been on my heart for the past few months.

Recently I have been struggling with the concept of what it means for us to be men and women of God who are all so different, yet we are supposed to live in community with one another.  Why is it that we can begin to feel alone even if we are sitting in the church pews?  It all boils down to relationships.

We all have stories; our stories have shaped us and molded us into who we are today.  Some may struggle with their "story" and feel embarrassed or ashamed, but I find so much encouragement in the past because it can be used in a mighty way in the future.  We have all gone through hardships and we feel like there is no one on this planet that will ever understand what it feels like.  No one is going to understand how it all came to pass.  People are going to judge me or hold it against me.  God could never forgive me, how could other people?

I think we need to change how we look at our pasts and refocus on how we can allow the Lord to use our pasts to be used for something far greater than we can ever imagine in the future.  I believe that the Lord does not desire for us to hurt or feel "lost", but if we allow Him to work in us, He can show the light in what we see as our darkest times.  Don't allow the past to stay in the dark, because the dark can creep up when you least expect it.

But that is what is so amazing about grace.  The Lord takes our past and wipes it clean if we just give it all to Him.  He doesn't keep any records or remembers the countless times we mess up.  He makes us new every day if allow Him to work in and through us in this everyday adventure.

Why do we allow the enemy to use our past to haunt our present and future?  Why not take our story and share with others to glorify Him?  Sometimes all it takes is a conversation that can change the trajectory of someone's life.  Becoming vulnerable and honest with others about what we have gone through may be what someone needs to hear.  Share with others how the Lord is taking your past and shining through to your future.

We were created to be in relationship with one another.  God never intended us to live life alone or isolated, and I honestly believe that is where the enemy can do the most damage: when we have become isolated from the family of God.

Text someone today and tell them hi.  Ask them how they are doing.  Call them and say you want to finally grab that coffee you've always been talking about.  Do something.  Be proactive in sharing your story.  Be courageous.  Be bold.  Be love.  Be in relationship with others and build the community we all want and need.

Who knows, your story may be the introduction of Christ to someone.

Short Girl Problems.

Okay.  So, I have spent my entire life being short.  If you know me I am short; if you don't know me, all you have to know is I am short.  You all think it is so adorable and funny how short I am as if you have never been my height before.  Well, let me remind you, you were my height once too.  Hey, I am not hating on all you 5 feet and plus people or anything.  I like who I am.  Actually, I love who I am.

But in case you have forgotten what it is like to be my height, I just want to touch base on a couple of things:

1)  I am not in junior high.  I am not in high school.  Nor am I in college.  And no, I did not graduate at an insanely young age.  I know you're laughing now because I look "young" and all, but let's see who is laughing when we are 45 years of age.  Yeah.

2)  Cabinets, closets, and pantries were made for giants.  How about next time you can't reach something, I just sit, point, laugh, and tell you to get a ladder.  Trust me, it does wonders for your self esteem.

3)  Yes I have small feet.  And yes I can buy kid shoes.  My shoes are half the price of yours.  Who's the sucker now?

4)  Let me stand in the front at the concert.  Your view will not be disturbed.  You won't even notice I am there.  Help a sister out.

5)  If you run into me because you "didn't see me down there", you can at least apologize or something.  No need for the giggles.  Didn't your mother teach you anything?

6)  Jeans?!  You want to go jean shopping?!  How about I go stick a needle in my eye.  That would be 95% more enjoyable.

7)  I love to hug.  But I apologize in advance if it turns into a side hug.  Don't take it personally.  It is an across the board rule.

8)  You want me to order a kids meal for you?  Sure.  I would absolutely love it if you could order off the senior discount menu.  It would make me the happiest girl in the world.

9)  WHAT?!  I am short?  Thanks for letting me know.  I completely forgot that I live in the land of giants.  I really needed that daily reminder.

10)  Yes I can reach the pedals.  Yes I sit on a pillow when I drive.  And you can bet your bottom dollar that I have the most comfortable seat in the car.

11)  I am allergic to the floor, so sitting in chairs really helps me out.  No need to worry about me.  It is all good.

12)  Short girls throw other short girls under the bus.  The moment they find another girl who is shorter than they are, you become their best friend because they feel tall around you.  As if one inch is THAT big of a difference.  Pft.

13)  Just because we are taking a photo, doesn't automatically mean I am in the front.  I can go stand on that chair in the corner.  While we're talking about taking photos, there really is no need to take a "raising the bar" photo.  That fad is long gone.

Life is beautiful.  Go hug a short person.  Go hug on a tall person.  Just go hug on someone.  It'll make their day.

Have a happy Friday my friends!

The Insta Challenge: Photo a Day.

December 1st, my sister-in-law Sara talked me into doing The Instagram's "Photo a Day" challenge.  For those who do not know, The Instagram is a social media avenue for friends, family, and strangers to share photos of all the happenings in their life.  The challenge goes as such: every day there is a given theme and the participant is supposed to take a photo corresponding with the word or phrase that is given.

I have always been slightly weary of doing one of these things, not because I don't like it, but I just don't have to patience for these kinds of activities.  But I thought, hey why not?  It is Christmas time and I should have things to take photos of, or so I thought.

Here is the list of all the days and the corresponding photos I was required to take:

1. Red                                        11. Green                                 21. On the Door
2. Where I Stood                       12. Joy Is...                              22. Sparkly
3. Silver                                     13. Composition                       23. Tradition
4. Tiny                                       14. Drink                                 24. Wrapped
5. In the Cupboard                     15. Lights                                25. Best Bit of Your Day
6. Shadow                                  16. Makes You Feel Merry      26. Where You Slept
7. 6 O'Clock                               17. Tree                                   27. What You're Doing Now
8. I Shop Here                           18. Big                                     28. Something Awesome
9. This is the Weather Now       19. 'Tis The Season To..          29. Reflect Best Bit of 2013
10. R is For...                             20. I'm Listening To..              30. You
                                                                                                   31. Celebrate

So, I decided that I was going to try this.  I was going to take a list and be as creative as possible with my photos so I can share with the rest of the world.  I felt like I was beginning this awesome challenge and I needed to dominate.

But I have a couple of confessions to make:
1)  I didn't do all 31 days during the challenge.  The 6th day, I had my wisdom teeth taken out so I did not participate on "shadow".  But after an event like that, I don't think anyone can really be creative with taking a picture of a shadow.  I mean seriously.  I also didn't do "where I slept" because who wants to see a photo of someone's bed?  Man, I am such a rebel.
2)  I couldn't keep track of the days.  I did not post "Day 27", but posted two "Day 28s" instead.  Each word/phrase for the day was numbered.  How I lost track of the day is beyond me.
3)  I thought some of my posts were more clever than they actually were.  I really do crack myself up.

Towards the end of the month, I began to lose my "oomf" for this photo challenge.  I have always had a love for photography, but this was a whole different ball game.  This was work.  This was commitment.  A crap ton of it too.

I began to realize I didn't want to have to "search" for the best photo to post on The Instagram.  I didn't want to be put in a small little box.  I didn't like that I felt like I couldn't post things that I wanted to post.

Then it hit me.  Hit me hard I tell you.  In the midst of this challenge I began to recognize God in everything.  I began to see that His hand is everywhere, even in the smallest of things.  Why is it that I didn't see it before?  Is it because this little electrical box is always glued to the palm of my hand?  Is it because I just want to take a photo so I am able to receive insta-affirmation that what I like/do, people like too?  Am I too consumed with other things that I can't look up to see around me?

We all get so wrapped up in social media and our lives that we forget to recognize the little things that God loves and does.  We need to learn to appreciate the little things and cherish them.  And maybe leave it at that.  I don't think we need to be Instagramming this and Facebooking that.  Yes, it is fun to share life's moments with others, but sometimes the best memories are those you can keep close with you.  Cherish the "awwww" moments.  Simply hug on others.  Take in the beauty of this world and give thanks.

Here are a couple of photos of December's photo a day challenge.  If you like these pictures, please feel free to check out the rest of my photos on The Instagram (@angelamardock).  I think they're fun.

The Entitled Generation.

I have a confession to make to you all.  I love Hallmark movies, I really do.  I was babysitting this weekend and watched a film about a woman named Caroline who married her sweetheart Neil on Valentine's Day in the early 40's.  He left for the war and promised he would come back to her.  So, she waited for 65 years.  Every Valentine's Day, she would wait at the train station for her love to return home to her.  I won't ruin the ending, but I can say without any shame, I cried.

As I watched this film, I began to notice something that I don't see too often in my generation.  I noticed that men and women in the generations before me had an attitude and lifestyle of complete service and sacrifice for the betterment of those around them.  We hear stories from our grandparents and parents that they did whatever it took to succeed, all while having a demeanor of respect for others.

I attend a young adult group on Sundays and one of the things that we talked about was the characteristics of this generation.  The speaker told a story about how there was a survey taken among the leaders of the top 50 companies in the country who hired young adults.  The leaders were asked to write down one word that describes the young adult generation of today.  After they did that, 200-250 employees of these companies were asked to do the same.  The employees said things like "empowered" and "creative", but the word that their bosses said was "entitled".

I heard that and I really wrestled with it.  It could be because I am in that age bracket or because I really don't like entitlement.  I came home and asked my family what they thought and again, it began to rock my world a little bit.  We began to discuss what entitled meant and how it is seen everyday with the youth and young adults of today.

My generation (and the one below) have become completely dependent on technology.  There I said it.  Smart phones, computers, tablets, you name it - we are addicted to it.  It has become something that we have to have at all times.  I don't know about you, but I rarely ever leave the house without my cell phone and if I do, I have a mini freak out.

I thought it would be helpful to list a few things we use our smartphones for in case you forgot:
1. Talking/Texting
2. E-Mail
3. Directions/GPS
4. Weather (as if I can't walk outside to figure out what outfit to wear)
5. News
6. Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs, etc...)
7. Games
8. Surfing the web
9. Reading.
10. The list goes on and on and on and on.
11. List is still going on and on and on and on.

Can you think back to a time when cell phones used to be that huge brick with the long antenna that was 2 feet long?  Seems forever ago, right?  The first iPhone was released in 2007.  Not so forever huh.

You're probably asking me why this is relevant to being the "entitled generation", so here it goes.  We are taught to be thinkers, problem solvers, independent, world changers.  Don't get me wrong none of these are bad things, but this is what I have noticed.

We crave knowledge with a fierce passion and technology provides that to us 24/7, hence the addiction.  Look at the list above again and notice almost all of those things provide a vast amount of knowledge in an instant.  Again, not a bad thing but I think this generation has started a vicious mindset.  Because we are striving to be these "all-knowing" beings, we lose some foundational principals and practices which has easily resulted in this generation being called "entitled".  We feel like we are capable, full of knowledge, and don't need to be told what to do.

I believe we have lost the art of serving and respect.  We have lost the "do whatever it takes" mentality and replaced it with "do as little as possible to get by".  Think about it, when you write something on Twitter, you have 140 characters to "share" knowledge.  On Facebook, if there is a paragraph of information, it is almost too taxing to read and you most likely will scroll on by.  Instagram is a picture with a caption, and let's be honest, how often do you read the caption?  Don't even get me started on reading books.

We use technology to get snippets of information with the least amount of energy in doing so.  I watched a movie of Caroline doing whatever it takes while her love Neil was off at war.  She learned how to cook without Pinterest.  She collected scrap metal because it helped the community.  She raised a son while Neil was MIA without any mom blogs.  Neil was a lieutenant who had a chance to get home to his love, but sacrificed his trip home to save a fellow soldier who was injured.  He had to learn how to survive on an island.  He did all he could to keep his promise to Caroline.  And in return, she waited for him at that train station.

Stay with me here.

Whether you deny it or not, technology/knowledge has separated us from one another drastically.  Caroline and Neil showed that they were committed to one another (while being apart) and would do whatever it took to get back to each other.  What if we served each other with that same passion?  It doesn't have to be in a love-type relationship either; it can be with anyone or anywhere.

I think we need to begin to really evaluate our priorities and how we can be proactive in losing the "entitled" label.  I believe being entitled revolves all around the mindset of "me me me" and disregards the need for others.  What if we began to serve and respect others above ourselves?  What if we do things for others without expecting anything in return?  What if we try to remove the poison of complaining out of our lives?  What if we begin to do whatever it takes to succeed even if it means a season of discomfort?  God forbid we get jobs.

I hope that I am not the only one who sees we need to make a serious change in our generation and to be honest, we are the only ones who can change it.  Let's be in conversation with one another and challenge each other to push above and beyond our "norm" and serve those around us.  Let's be proactive in changing our generation's label.  I don't want to be known as the "entitled generation", do you?

5 Reasons Why I Love Being Adopted.

As some of you may or may not know, I was adopted from Bucharest, Romania when I was 6 months old.  I wish I could sit down with each of you to share my story, but luckily, my dad (co-founder of International Family Services) wrote it out for you so you can read it while sitting on your couch in your favorite sweats and drinking some of your favorite tea.  You know that sounds awesome.

Please take the time to read this story because in reality, this is not just my story.  There are stories like mine all around the world of children who were nameless, faceless, and Fatherless and found a new home.  Fortunately for me, I am able to use my story to share with people like you the beauty of adoption and the immense need of homes for orphans all around the world.

Click the link below to read how an orphan girl was blessed with the most amazing gift: a family.
A Stormy Night in Bucharest

I thought it was only fitting during National Adoption Month and the season of Thanksgiving to list a few reasons why I love being adopted.  It is such a big part of my life and I hope yours as well.  So here it goes.

1.  I love that my family is what my mom calls, "A bag of skittles."  My parents have ten children, six of whom are adopted from various countries around the globe.  We all look different and we all love each other the same.  I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

2. I love that I am not treated differently because I am not blood related to my family members.  Growing up, my parents never let us use the excuse that they were not our parents or he/she was not my sibling.  Just because we do not share the same DNA, does not mean I am any less of a child in my home.  If we ever did try to use that card, we lost the argument immediately.  And we were most definitely grounded.

3.  I love being a Mardock.  My family rocks, quirks and all!  I couldn't have asked for a better family to be in.  If you don't know a Mardock, you need to.  We are awesome.

4.  I love that I am able to witness thousands of orphans all around the world find loving homes.  My parents co-founded International Family Services when I was adopted over two decades ago.  They have placed (and continue to place) over 4,000 children in homes who would have been on the streets otherwise.  My parents (and IFS staff) are real life heroes; aka rock stars.

5.  I love that you were also adopted.  No, you did not read that wrong.  Yes, I have been adopted into the Mardock family, but what is even more amazing is we have all been adopted into God's family, if we choose to be.  Jesus came down to this earth and died for each and everyone one of us so that we could be adopted into God's family.  All we have to do is accept God's invitation to join His family.  Simply put, we are the children of God.

Let's all embrace that we are adopted and celebrate together!  It is nothing to ever be ashamed or embarrassed of; quite the opposite actually.  It is something we should claim boldly and be excited to share with anyone and everyone.  Why do you love being adopted?  Because let's face it, it rocks.

The Girl Who Loves Today Without Thinking About Tomorrow.

Life after graduation is interesting.  I would say it is almost, if not, the hardest transition I have ever gone through.  But I can also say it is one of the most exciting times in my life as well.

As graduation approached and well after, many thoughts began to consume my mind; thoughts that quickly turned into questions.  Questions like, what should I be "when I grow up"?  Where should I live?  How will I afford being an adult?  Where do I find friends?  And the inevitable, if/when will I get married?

These are all questions that a young adult asks and tries to figure out as soon as possible.  One might say these questions become the black rainy cloud that lingers overhead until answered.  But I have recently come to a realization that I felt the need to share with the rest of the social media world.  So, here you go.

Why do we become so fixated on the idea that "once I get (you fill in the blank), I will be happy"?  Once I get that degree, I will be able to get that job.  Once I get married, I will be content in my life.  Once I have my dream job, all will be right in the world.  The list goes on.  Don't tell me you haven't thought this way, we all have.  There is nothing wrong with that.  But what I have come to realize is if we continue this habit, we continue to miss what is going on today.  And today might be the best day of your life.

We are so focused on "getting to that next step", we forget to enjoy the season we are in, whether good or bad.  Our natural instinct is to strive for happiness and peace.  We don't do well under stress, pain, or chaos.  But if all we do is strive for the good and easy, we don't allow the Lord to shine through the hard.  Think about it, when we share our "prayer requests", it usually revolves around us asking God to bring us through this trial or to take away the hurt or pain we may be experiencing.  I rarely hear us praising for our trials and tribulations; or praying for the Lord to shine through our struggles and hardships.

I think we may have it backwards.  In Ecclesiastes 3 it talks all about the different seasons we are going to go through, so obviously the Lord knows they exist.  It really is no shocker.  So, why not take on the day, whether good or bad, and love it?  Why not accept that we will have good and bad days and decide to rejoice either way?

Once we begin to enjoy today, we have to release thinking about tomorrow.  Obviously we should have goals and dreams but not allow them to steal away from enjoying where we currently are.  Yes, we all want a good paying job that we all love.  Yes, we want to get married and have our own family.  These are not bad things to desire, but they can dominate our thoughts and can restrict the Lord to work and move in your life.

Being a lady who has graduated from college, I get asked about my relationship status quite a bit, which can cause one to question whether it is okay being single or not; as if having a man defines who you are as a woman & woman of God.  I also get asked what my 5 year plan is.  If I knew, I would tell you, trust me.  I wish I knew where my financial stability was coming from.  I get asked all these "future" oriented questions, but is it bad to not enjoy where I am right now?

Should I be thinking once I get these "things" worked out, my life will be perfect?

I believe if we enjoy today without thinking about tomorrow, we allow the Lord to have complete and full reign in directing us to become the women and men of God that He is calling all of us to be.  Today we need to rejoice where we are, not where we think we want to be.  The Lord may totally change the trajectory of your life tomorrow.

Enjoy being single.  Enjoy not having enough money in the bank.  Enjoy having good and bad days at work.  Enjoy the unknown.  Enjoy being obedient even when it is hard.  Allow the Lord to shine and bless you through every season of your life.  You won't regret it, I pinky promise.

I choose to be a girl who loves today without thinking about tomorrow.  Will you join me?

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life ?  “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Shall We?

Hello World,

Sorry I have not shared with you the things that have been going on in my life recently, I know you have been dying to know.  Well, I will spare you the details, but what I will tell you is that I am now a college graduate (woot woot) and currently trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up (isn't everyone?).  But here is proof I graduated.

In the meantime, I have decided I am going to live out the adventure called life.  This blog has been and will continue to be a way for me to celebrate this wonderful life with you all.  Some may be international journeys (you know I love traveling), while others simply may be about everyday occurrences.  Either way, life is meant to be shared.  We can just call this a new beginning to something great.

With that said, let's celebrate life and enjoy it together, shall we?

You ready?

Sincerely,
Angela

Not With Haste.

1 Semester.  15 Weeks.  9 Flights.  13 Cities. 6 Countries.  An adventure of a lifetime.

As I am packing up the rest of my things, making my bed, and crossing off everything on my to-do list, it never ceases to amazing me how quick time goes by.  I feel like I was just getting on a plane to see my sister and her family in England, but here I am done with an entire semester of classes in Spain and flying home for the holidays.

This moment is quite a bittersweet one because I have fallen in love with this place and the people and yet I cannot wait to go home to see my friends and family.  I know that Sevilla will hold a special place in my heart and I love that.  I know that I will look back on this semester and cherish all the memories that I have made.  I will look at the growth that I experienced as well as areas that I need to continue to grow in.  This life is one adventure that is always in process.  And in all honesty, I really do love that.

Finals are done and that completes my last fall semester of my college career and again, time seems to fly by in a blink of an eye (I am thinking about being a poet, what do you think?).   I cannot express enough the certainty I feel in the decision of studying abroad this past semester.  Of course I am human and wrestled with that decision, but luckily I have some amazing friends and family to encourage me before, during, and hopefully after.

All this to say is, I am coming home (probably right now to be honest).  I hope that you are as excited to see me as I am to see you.  I have missed everyone and I can't wait to spend some time with each of you hearing all that the Lord has been doing in your life these past four months.

Keep me in your prayers as I am taking the long journey home (and when I say long, I am not kiddin').  And please pray that I don't have another orange juice incident on the flights home.  I know that my adventure started off on a sour note, but we don't need a repeat of the occurrence.  That would be greatly appreciated.

Love Always,
Ang

Lady In Spain.

Hello Dear Family and Friends.

I write this while procrastinating on studying for finals.  Shocker.

But in all seriousness, I wanted to update you on the past couple of days here in Sevilla.  But first I have a confession.

Sevilla is absolutely stunning dressed in Christmas lights.  That's all I gotta say about that.

So, this past weekend we went to our mentor's house for some games and an amazing lunch.  And get this; I had Dr. Pepper.  Yes.  It was glorious.  I absolutely love this group of girls and the family we have been getting to hang out with.  It has been such a great thing to be able to fellowship in a Christian environment and really encourage and challenge each other.  And the family we get to hang out with is so cool.  Seriously.

After that, some of us wanted to go back to Plaza de Espana here in Sevilla.  We spent time there our first weekend and we thought it would be a good way to say goodbye to Sevilla by going back for our last weekend.  We rowed the boats.  It was difficult.  And funny.  And awesome.

This past weekend, we celebrated my friend Leah's birthday because her birthday is actually two days after we get home and we wanted to celebrate with her and have a proper good time before we all leave.  We went out for some tapas and of course Rayas ice cream (banana to be exact).  It was such a fun time laughing and being with friends.  We were able to just walk around and enjoy all the Christmas lights.  It is seriously beautiful.

Here are some photos for your eyeballs.

We also walked around the Christmas markets that are here right next to the cathedral.  I noticed something odd, and I couldn't help but share.

There were many more where that come from...

At any rate...

On the way back, I walked by the Torre de Oro which is a landmark here.  It is actually a really cool place.

So, now we are in full gear with finals and I actually have one suitcase packed.  Yes Mom.  You should be proud.  But in the Christmas spirit, I thought I'd share a couple of things.

1) I wanted to share me as a tree topper because my lovely friend Katelyn decided it was the perfect tree topper in all of the world.  I mean, I can't disagree with her.

2) I have 3 days left here in Sevilla.  Man has time flew bad.  As it saddens me to get ready to say goodbye to this beautiful place, I am also so stoked to go home and spend the holidays with my family.

3) Here is a great cover song that I found this semester and it has to do with going home.  You may know it.  You may not.  Either way, I like it.  So, without further ado (In case you're wondering, the meaning of ado = hubbub, bustle, flurry, or fuss.  You're welcome).

I'll Be Home For Christmas.

This is the first time that I have not gone home during the semester.  I have been gone since September 1st, and although I am loving it here in Europe, I am quite excited to go home for the holidays.  There is nothing like seeing stockings with your name on it hanging on the fireplace.  It just warms the heart when you walk into the house after a long day and see the tree lit up in beautiful Christmas lights in your family room.  I love the moments where you and someone you care about share a nice warm cup of hot cocoa and if you're daring enough, you put a candy cane inside to use as a stirrer.

Christmas is my favorite time of year and I can't wait to share it with those I love.  I hope that during this time of year, you take the time to appreciate not only those around you, but the season itself.  We get so wrapped up in the gift buying, the party going, and making plans that the beautiful season seems to fly by us in a blink of an eye.  Let us remember the reason for this season and truly celebrate it.  Put the cell phone and computer down and celebrate this season properly.  Please.  :)

Shout out to my good friend Josh Groban.

Love Always,
Ang
